A man and a woman have died following a house fire in Conamara this morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at a property near Casla, shortly after 6am.

The man and woman were the only people in the house at the time the blaze broke out.

The detached bunglalow is located in the townland of Gleann Mhac Muirinn, around 12km from Casla.

Three units of the County Galway Fire Service were dispatched to the scene, with personnel from Galway city and An Cheathrú Rua involved in bringing the situation under control.

A technical examination of the bungalow will be carried out in an effort to determine the cause of the blaze.

The bodies of the man and woman will be removed to University Hospital Galway later today, where post-mortem examinations will be carried out.
