Interesting conversation this morning over a coffee with a friend, It seems that a mutual friends teenager applied for a J1 visa and was rejected, If that was not bad enough said teenager decided to spend the summer in Germany booked their tickets and was told when they got to the air port that they would not be accepted onto the flight that they were on a no fly list now. It seems said teenager was very vocal on social media of their support for a certain band, they also had loads of anti Israeli propaganda including flags of proscribed terrorist groups on their timeline. The question is can said person go to German by sea and land ? This is not the first case I have heard of this happening. I suppose they thought it was cool to fly terrorist flags, some bar stool legal eagles said “You do know Hamas and Hezbollah are not proscribed terrorist organisations in Ireland you fool” The funny thing is the European Union has proscribed the military wing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. This decision was made in 2013, with the EU citing the group’s involvement in the bombing of an Israeli tourist bus in Bulgaria, its support for the Syrian government, and the ongoing crisis in Syria as key reasons. In 2001, the EU included Hamas-Izz al-Din al-Qassem (the military wing of Hamas) and PIJ as terrorist groups on the annex to Council Common Position of 27 December 2001, which authorises the freezing of funds and assets and prohibits the provision of resources and services to listed groups.  In 2003, the EU amended the listing to include the entirety of Hamas (including the political arm). In January 2024, the EU established a sanctions regime targeting individuals and entities who support Hamas and PIJ.  Individuals and entities can be listed for activities such as: supporting, materially or financially, Hamas or the PIJ; supplying, selling, or transferring arms and related materiel to the two organisations; supporting actions which undermine or threaten the stability or security of Israel in conjunction with Hamas and the PIJ; being involved in serious violations of international humanitarian law or human rights law; inciting or publicly provoking violent actions of the two organisations; and providing support to those facilitating or enabling violent action by Hamas and the PIJ (i.e. sponsors of those who sponsor the two organisations). Now the weird thing is that Ireland has not proscribed Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist organisations. Funny that as they seem to lap up every other EU decisio Anyway for those that thought these were cool flags to fly in public or put on your time line I think the world is going to be a different place for you.
