Most Europeans and Americans know very little about Iran. Its modern history (in many cases narrated by its enemies) dominates most of the narratives about this incredible place. Some things might surprise you, the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BC), founded by Cyrus the Great, was one of the largest empires in human history, known for its ultra efficient road system and postal service. Zoroastrianism, one of the earliest monotheistic religions, emerged in Iran around the 6th century BC, influencing global religious thought. The Arab Muslim conquest in the 7th century changed everything and ended the Sasanian Empire, spreading Islam and shaping Iran’s modern cultural core. The Safavid Dynasty (1501–1736) established Shia Islam as the state religion, setting Iran apart in the Muslim world. The 1979 Islamic Revolution overthrew the Pahlavi monarchy (the Shah), creating the Islamic Republic and redefining Iran’s global image and political stance. Persian contributions shine in science, with people like polymath Al-Biruni (973–1048) measuring the Earth’s circumference with stunning accuracy, while Omar Khayyam advanced algebra and astronomy. Persian literature, with poets like Rumi and Hafez, remains a global treasure, blending mysticism and philosophy. Iran is a great country renowned for its warm and hospitable people. It’s not just another far-off place on a map. Regardless of its government and current leadership, agree or disagree, dont allow one side or another to dehumanise those that will suffer and are suffering as the drums of War beat louder. War is like marriage, easy to get into but not so easy to get out of.
