FORMER hurling star DJ Carey has pleaded guilty to 10 deception charges – including falsely claiming to have cancer to defraud people to pay for treatment.

The All-Ireland winner entered the plea before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court this morning .Former Kilkenny hurling star DJ Carey pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on July 2, 2025. The 54-year-old admitted to dishonestly inducing people to pay him money by falsely claiming he needed funds for cancer treatment. The charges, spanning 2014 to 2022, involve 12 complainants, including Denis O’Brien. Carey was due to stand trial but entered guilty pleas, avoiding a jury trial. He has genuine health issues, including heart surgery in 2024. Judge Patricia Ryan remanded him on bail, with sentencing set for October 29, 2025
