Appearing at the Circuit Court in the Criminal Courts of Justice on July 2nd 2025, former hurler DJ Carey stood to plead guilty to 10 charges put to him


Businesswoman Sarah Newman has spoken publicly about her relationship with DJ Carey.
The ex- Kilkenny sportsman, 54, was charged with various counts of inducing people to make a monetary payment after fraudulently claiming to have cancer and needing finances to obtain treatment. Appearing at the Circuit Court in the Criminal Courts of Justice on July 2nd 2025, Carey stood to plead guilty to 10 charges put to him. Former Dragons’ Den businesswoman Sarah was in a nine-year relationship and was engaged to the multi All-Ireland title and All-Star award winner, but that changed in 2012. Sarah says she first discovered that DJ was lying about having cancer when she had a confrontation with a businessman , who told her that DJ had told him he was undergoing cancer treatment in the US.

THey also told her that he had given DJ a brand-new Range Rover, expecting him to pay him back in installments. The cheques had bounced, leading to the discussion with Sarah She soon ended the relationship, and says she made a complaint to The Gardai.
She said she had been “totally unaware of his lies” and feels she was “probably one of the biggest victims of his fraud.”
She told The Irish Independent that she was unable to “trust anybody for around 10 years” and said described what he did as “unforgivable. “Reflecting on what she learned from the relationship, she said: “Listen to the red flags. But it’s easier said than done.”
“I am very relieved that the victims of DJ’s crimes will not have to be put through the trauma of giving evidence in what was expected to be a long and drawn-out trial.”But she added that the former hurler “could have saved an awful lot of taxpayers’ money by pleading guilty a long time ago.”
“I moved on a long time ago. I’m very happy. I’ve got a very happy life and I’ve got very genuine friends who I love, adore, and hopefully they feel the same way about me.”
Sarah, now also known as Lady Digby, is happily married to Lord Henry Digby, the Baron of Offaly.
