Tributes are being paid to a soccer club captain who was stabbed to death.
Joseph McEvoy, 34, was killed in the Shancastle Close area of Clondalkin, Dublin, in the early hours of yesterday morning. Mr McEvoy, who has been described as ‘the nicest man you’d ever meet’, was attacked outside a house at around 5.30 am. He was rushed to hospital but declared dead a short time later.
A man in his 30s, who was known to Mr McEvoy, has been arrested by gardaí. While he was detained for assault causing harm, it is understood that a murder investigation will officially commence in the coming days.
The stabbing occurred after days of chaos in the west Dublin region. These included petrol bomb attacks and car rammings; all thought to be part of a bitter local drugs feud. In a post on social media, Quarryvale FC stated: ‘We are devastated to hear of the loss of our club captain Joey.‘The nicest man you’d ever meet and an absolute warrior on the pitch. Big Joe Mac was the life of every party, and nothing will feel the same with him gone. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this horrible time.’
Gardaí said they are ‘investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a man following a fatal assault’.
