Why was he here in the first place? Questions asked after migrant admits sexually assaulting woman at hotel in Cork

A number of people on social media are querying why exactly the government are allowing endless numbers of migrants to come into the country after so many migrants living here already have committed crimes.

A woman jumped off a massage table in shock after a masseur at a Cork hotel spa sexually assaulted her, shortly after suggesting a “surprise” at the end of her treatment, reports RTE.

Lenon De Souza Seara, of Granary Court, North Ring Road, Cork, appeared before Cork Circuit Criminal Court and admitted to sexually assaulting the woman at the spa where he worked on 4 July 2024.

Sergeant Brendan McBridge informed Judge Helen Boyle that the 35-year-old, originally from Brazil, had asked the 40-year-old woman if she wanted a surprise, reports RTE.

She assumed the “surprise” might involve the use of extra oils.

At the time, the woman was lying on a massage table, covered by a towel. She wore disposable underwear and had a small towel placed over her face.

The court heard that she was completely stunned when Mr De Souza Seara licked her vagina, reports RTE.

Her victim impact statement was read aloud by Sgt McBridge. In it, she expressed how deeply violated she felt by what happened during her spa visit.

“I was flustered and vulnerable. For context I was wearing disposable underpants, had a towel over my face and my body was draped with a towel. So effectively I was otherwise completely naked,” reports RTE.

“When the incident occurred, I immediately sprang up and took the face towel off, basically leaving me even more exposed, shocked and repeating: ‘No, no, no’. I was naked and frazzled,” reports RTE.

She left the spa immediately after the incident.he went to gardaí the following day after discussing the situation with her husband. She explained she had been torn between reporting it and staying silent.

“After all, I was physically unharmed. To speak up catapulted me into a process I didn’t intentionally sign up for,” she said, reports RTE.

“He [the defendant] said it was a misunderstanding. Ok, so it was a misunderstanding. What does that mean to me? Is it somehow my fault? Did I not pick up on something earlier? Was he testing me all along? What was the motivation? How far was he going to go? How many times has he done this before? How did I not gauge it and stop it earlier? These questions I will never really know the answer to, but they are the ones that keep looping in my head,” the woman said, reports RTE.

“I feel so naive and stupid. How did I not know how to speak until it was too late? How far would it have gone? I feel like I can’t trust my own observations and missed the danger signs. That makes me question myself as a person. I feel bad for what he is going through and wonder how he is supporting himself after his loss of earnings – It also makes me mad that I feel responsible for that,” she added, reports RTE.

“I did nothing wrong. I was violated. I spoke up. I have to live with the unanswered questions,’ reports RTE.

Defence counsel Elaine Audley BL told the court that her client had fully cooperated with gardaí and had made a complete admission.

Ms Audley stated that he accepted full responsibility for his behaviour, which he claimed was due to a misunderstanding.

She explained that De Souza Seara had been exposed to sexualised behaviour from a young age and had social interaction challenges, reports RTE.

He was raised in poverty and had lost a brother to murder.

Ms Audley added that her client lost his job as a result of the incident. He had apologised for his conduct, reports RTE.

She said he is now retraining and has left the spa industry.

Ms Audley noted that her client would be willing to leave Ireland if that would prevent a prison sentence.

Judge Boyle remanded De Souza Seara in custody and said the case warranted a custodial sentence, with final sentencing scheduled for 21 May, reports RTE.
