Repeat driving offender Philip Ormond (43), who was speeding when he ran a red light and knocked down an elderly woman as she was crossing the road, causing her death, before fleeing the scene has been jailed for four years and three months. Ormond has 53 previous convictions, included 24 road traffic offences, one of which was for dangerous driving. The court heard there was evidence that he changed his clothes in the aftermath of the offence, while his car had its registration plates covered by black plastic bags. He had driven through a red light and was 18 km over the speed limit when he struck Kathleen Furlong on the R136 in Tallaght at the junction of Fortunestown Way and Cheeverstown Road around 11am on September 8, 2023. His defence counsel said a letter from Senator Lynn Ruane was before the court, because counsel said she feels the need to offer support to Ormond. However, he said she is at pains to sympathise with the Furlong family. https://courtsnewsireland.ie/repeat-offender-who-broke-red-light-and-caused-death-of-elderly-woman-is-jailed/2025/07/10/
