A famous photo taken moments before the execution of two young Russian Soldiers. On June 23, 1941, 2 young border guards fought an entire column of German motorcyclists. They were wounded, captured, and lined up to be shot. But they behaved so calmly and confidently it amazed the Germans. They laughed at them, mocked them, and joked. The young German officer who gave the order to execute the Russians later wrote in his diary- “These Russian soldiers were not afraid of us at all. It was not bravado or feigned bravery. For a second, I even thought that I was standing in their place. A disgusting feeling… They left with a smile on their lips, and I am ready to swear that not only I, but also my soldiers felt goosebumps and an unpleasant chill, the moment their bodies touched the ground. They were absolutely sure that they would be avenged, and we would lose the war.”
