A large protest took place in Athlone against a proposed accommodation centre for up to 1,000 asylum seekers at Lissywollen. Organized by local groups, the Demonstration began at 2 p.m. at Athlone Civic Centre, with marchers chanting “Athlone Says No” as they proceeded to the site. The protest reflects ongoing local concerns about the scale of the proposed facility, which would initially house international protection applicants in tents before transitioning to modular units.
