Syrian refugees in Austria are deliberately failing German language exams so they don’t have to work and can continue receiving state benefits, according to Bild. According to the Austrian Integration Fund, two-thirds of new arrivals need to learn to read and write, and 44% of them are completely illiterate. This makes the problem widespread: for many, it is easier to receive state support than to go to work.
