26/08/2025

A funeral has been set for Paul Butler, who died last week following an interaction with a Garda on O’Connell Street in Dublin.

The 51-year-old died on August 18 after he suffered serious injuries following an interaction with the Garda.

A Garda was suspended from duty after being put under investigation in relation to the death.

Paul’s death notice states that he will be ‘lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his partner Áine, mother Dympna, brothers and sisters Stephen, Ciara, Maria, Kevin, Maireád, Rachael, John, Aidan, Declan and Grace, their partners, Aunt Marian, nieces, nephews, and his Kilkenny family, kind neighbours and his many friends’.

His reposing will be at the Fanagan Kirwan Funeral Home, Fairview Strand on Wednesday, August 27. Family will be in attendance from 5 to 7pm.

A requiem mass will take place the following day in the Church of Saint Vincent de Paul, Marino at 10am.

Paul’s family have asked that any donations be made to Barnardos or ADHD Ireland, with flowers to be only from family members.

The incident leading to the Phibsborough resident’s death occurred at around 4.15am and Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, is conducting an independent investigation.

Paul was transferred to the Mater Hospital, where he died a couple of days later.

Fiosrú said that one of its on-call team of investigators attended the scene.

The office has been liaising with the Dublin City Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist in relation to a post-mortem examination.

The investigation team and its family liaison officer have been working directly with Paul’s family.
