GARDAÍ ARE CARRYING out searches in north Dublin today as part of a major investigation into the suspected disappearance of a boy who is now feared dead.

The child has not been seen for a number of years and it is believed he was never reported missing.

Gardaí are liaising with the child and family agency Tusla, as well as other State bodies to determine what happened to the child.

A garda spokeswoman confirmed that the operation is underway.

“Gardaí are continuing to carry out operational enquiries in North Co. Dublin into the current whereabouts and welfare of a child.

“An Garda Síochána is not in a position to provide any further detail at this time.”

In a statement this afternoon, a spokesperson for Tusla confirmed that the agency had made a referral to gardaí on Friday in relation to the missing child.

This referral was “in relation to our concerns about the safety and wellbeing of this child,” the spokesperson said.

“We continue to work closely with the Gardai, and in line with normal practice, all relevant information relating to this family has been shared.

“Our thoughts are with the child’s family, friends, and community at this difficult time,” they added.

Minister for Children Norma Foley said in a statement that she has been briefed on the investigation by her officials and that she has asked Tusla to keep her updated on developments in the case.

“I am deeply concerned about this missing child. Uppermost in my thoughts is the welfare of this child,” she said.

She also appealed to anyone with information about the child to co-operate with Gardaí.
