A former TD has been arrested by gardaí on suspicion of social welfare fraud after an investigation by the Department of Social Protection.
The ex-politician, who has not held office in several years, was detained at his home and interviewed before being released. He is accused of illegally claiming the pensions of his deceased parents over a prolonged period, allegedly forging documents and failing to notify authorities of their deaths.
Investigators believe the fraudulent claims may have cost the State a significant sum. His arrest, first reported by The Irish Independent, was carried out under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. The Department of Social Protection, supported by gardaí assigned to its regional social welfare fraud unit, is continuing its inquiries.
