This is like Heather Humphreys’s raid on pensions. She raised the number of required PRSI contributions from 10 years’ worth to 40 years’ worth, and set a deadline for January 2034 after which the Total Years Approach (TIA) will be mandatory. Anyone with gaps in their PRSI record (due to freelance work, travelling, or caring informally where they’re not counted) who will reach State Pension age after 31st December 2033 will have their pension cut. They can’t even rely on the Non-Contributory State Pension if they’re married / cohabiting because the whole household income will be taken into account in a Means Test. So a woman who spent years caring for her sick husband – but wasn’t officially his “carer” – will now have to live off his State Pension. She’ll have no pension of her own unless she leaves him! This affects everyone under the age of 58, as anyone can find themselves in a position where they’ll have to take years out of work, and voluntary contributions are only allowed make up a small proportion of a person’s PRSI record. It especially affects people in their 50s who won’t have enough time to make up the extra years unless hey work until they’re in their 90s!
