Beard returned to take over the Liverpool women’s team for a second time in 2021 and helped the Reds return to the top-flight with promotion as Championship champions in 2022.

Liverpool sacked Beard in February this year before he had a brief two-month spell in charge of Burnley which came to an end when he resigned in August.

Manchester United women manager Marc Skinner described Beard as an ‘icon’ and Liverpool boss Arne Slot also paid tribute to the ‘great human being’.

‘My reaction was one of grief,’ said Slot, who arrived at Anfield last year.

‘I met him last season and he not only did great things for this football club, for the women’s team, back-to-back league titles, came back to [the] new women’s team when they were playing one division below, so that tells you probably how much he loved the club as well.
