SUPERGRASS Jonathan Dowdall is set to be freed from jail imminently, we can reveal.
The ex-Sinn Fein councillor — who testified against mob boss Gerry Hutch at his murder trial — will then leave the country immediately.
Dowdall, 50, who will be given a new name by gardai, will enter the witness protection programme with his family.
The Dowdalls are likely to be shipped off to either Canada or Australia. The Irish taxpayer will pick up the €1million bill for the family’s accommodation and costs until they get on their feet.
He has served three years of a four-year sentence for facilitating the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel, in February 2016.
And he and his family have received various death threats for agreeing to turn State evidence.
He has also been detained in the protected wing away from other inmates at Limerick Prison.
Dowdall was sharing the special unit in recent weeks with gangster Fat Freddie Thompson.
A prison source said: “Jonathan Dowdall has more or less completed his sentence and will be released imminently.
