Many know the story of the 12-year-old French girl, Lola, who was raped and killed on this day in 2022. Many have no idea that Lola’s father, Johan Daviet, also died two years later as he descended into a pit of grief. On Oct. 14, Lola’s parents grew worried when she did not return home from school, as she usually did alone every day. Her father, Johan, was the caretaker of their building in Paris, where Lola lived with her family. He checked the surveillance cameras and learned that his daughter had entered the building but then disappeared with a woman. Police discovered signs of a kidnapping in the basement and launched a Paris-wide search. Lola’s body was found that same evening stuffed in a suitcase, with numerous wounds to her throat. The woman who was arrested for the gruesome torture and murder is the Algerian migrant Dahbia Benkired. She admitted to raping the young girl before murdering her. This rape, murder, and torture occurred despite an open deportation order that was never executed. The French state failed Lola, just as it has failed so many other victims. In fact, that same year, only 0.2% of Algerians ordered to leave the country were actually deported .Benkired expressed no guilt for the murder, according to police sources. On Feb. 23, 2024, Johan, Lola’s father, died from grief at the age of 49, marking the second victim in this tragic saga. he was getting divorced the same day as the interview.

“I’m depressed and I’ve fallen back into a state of pain,” he said, while also describing his descent into alcoholism. When he told the interviewer there are 24 hours in a day, but for him, each day drags on for 48, it became apparent the man was living in hell. Everything was taken from him. Benkired’s trial will begin on Oct. 17. She faces life imprisonment. Regardless of her sentence, nothing will bring back Lola and her father. More victims will surely follow.
