The town of Tuam has two Cathedrals, one Catholic, one Church of Ireland (previously Catholic, pre-reformation). The reason dates back to the time that Tuam was the seat of the High Kings of Connacht. I sometimes go to the ‘Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary’ there for Sunday Mass. One of the notable features of the cathedral are its quite impressive and large stained glass windows. Built between 1827 & 1837, it was an impressive achievement for a region where Catholicism had been persecuted within living memory and in 1827 the anti-Catholic penal laws were still ‘the law of the land’.
