RTE have set their sights on insisting this family are innocent victims of discrimination and racism. They say they found the accused to be very loving parents (basing this on their subjective observations). They say the trial was unfair as the family had to face “an all white, all Irish jury” (in Ireland…imagine). They say the parents were not given a chance to explain what happened accurately (because of the interpreter). But NONE of that EXPLAINS ADEQUATELY HOW this child was injured. RTE also appears to have an issue with the length of the initial sentences imposed (almost 6 years for the father and almost 5 for the mother). FGM involves the partial or entire removal of the clitoris and vulva, it’s usually performed with a blade and without anaesthetic. It is an “honour” based abuse. Remember three medical doctors and one FGM expert said this child had been mutilated, so , if they are wrong, the what DID happen? If indeed these people are innocent and their children were separated from them (the parents served some of the initial sentences imposed) then that’s a travesty. BUT what are RTE doing to explain how a child can hurt herself so badly on a toy. Because that part of this story makes no sense whatsoever, nor does the part where several experts concluded she could not have received such injury as a result of such a fall. RTE say after years of fighting to clear their names, the couple at the centre of Ireland’s first and only FGM prosecution will have their bid for a certificate of miscarriage of justice heard next January. But how did their case reach this point? Well…it apparently reached this point because a 21 month old little girl had evidence of mutilation on her body. What am I missing here? Can anyone shed light please? I would like a calm and rational discussion on this please…thank you.
