Carey is now working as a cleaner and is spending his days washing the floors, cells and toilets in the C base of Mountjoy Prison where he is being detained.
He ran his scam for more than 12 years and Gardai believe he collected over a €1m at least under false pretences because many of his victims were too embarrassed and upset to testify against him.
A Mountjoy source said: “DJ is now working as a cleaner and seems to be quite happy doing his job. It is keeping him busy as he adapts to life in prison.
“We would expect him to do a few months here just like Drumm before being moved to an open prison.”
Criminals convicted for white collar crime such as fraud in Ireland generally serve most of their sentences in an open prison, and are not deemed a risk because they have no history of violence.
The Mountjoy source added: “DJ seems to have settled down and is getting on with it.”
