AN URGENT appeal for information has been issued after two churches in Northern Ireland were broken into on Christmas Day.

An investigation has been launched by the Police Service of Northern Ireland following the two robberies in Newtownhamilton, Co Armagh.

St Michael’s Catholic Church on Dundalk Street was robbed after 3pm on Christmas Day

Second Newtownhamilton Presbyterian on the Castleblayney Road was also targeted

One of the churches targeted was St Michael’s Catholic Church on Dundalk Street, while Second Newtownhamilton Presbyterian on the Castleblayney Road was also hit.

It was revealed that damage has been caused to both churches and several items were taken by the thieves.

These items include electronic speakers and a wall clock.

Police believe the robberies occurred sometime between 3pm on Christmas Day and 9am on St Stephen’s Day.

Issuing an appeal for information PSNI officials confirmed patrols in the area have been increased following the incidents.

A spokesperson said: “We are appealing to anyone that may have noted suspicious activity in the area of these places of Worship in particularly around Dundalk Road, Newtownhamilton and Castleblaney Street, Newtownhamilton during this time frame.

“Slieve Gullion Neighbourhood Policing Team are also aware of these incidents and have increased patrols in these areas.”

And PSNI Sergeant Nelson added: “I would ask that members of the public continue to be vigilant and report to police any suspicious activity around places of worship.
