As Iran faces its most widespread unrest in years, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo contrasted the current U.S. posture with what he called the silence of the Obama administration during past Iranian protest movements. Pompeo highlighted the close coordination between Trump and Netanyahu, suggesting that this time the U.S. is more willing to act in support of the Iranian people’s democratic aspirations, if they are ready to fight for them. “I remember when there were protests during President Obama’s time in office, and the Americans said nothing. Already, our State Department has put out a statement. It’s been made very clear by the closeness between Trump and Netanyahu that we’re prepared to do what is necessary to make sure that the Iranian people’s desires and wishes can come true if they’ll go work at it really hard.
