BREAKING: Ukrainian man charged after man dies following alleged assault in Roscommon on New Year’s Day/

A Ukrainian national has been charged with assault causing serious harm after a man died following an alleged incident in Co Roscommon on New Year’s Day.

Yevhen Shutko, 46, appeared before Roscommon District Court this morning, reports The Mirror.

The court heard that an alleged serious assault took place in Ballaghaderreen during the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Jordon Newin, who was in his 30s, was taken to Sligo University Hospital and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital, where he subsequently died, reports The Mirror.

Shutko, who has been living in Co Roscommon since arriving in Ireland almost two years ago, was charged with assault causing serious harm under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act.

Garda Brendan McGrath of Castlerea Garda Station told the court the accused was charged at 9.51pm on Saturday, to which he responded: “It was definitely not intentional… I was defending myself”, reports The Mirror.
