Tonight Sean, Isaac and Jemima Burke spent over 40 minutes in Castlebar Garda station reporting the recent death of our elderly neighbour in Mayo University Hospital. The elderly man was admitted to the hospital with a treatable condition. He was prescribed powerful anti-psychotic drugs and sedatives including Haloperidal and Midazolam. These drugs leave patients unable to eat, drink, communicate or even see the food left at their bedsides. Our neighbour suffered terrible dehydration and malnutrition and lost his life shortly after Christmas Day. Tonight we reported this crime to Sgt. Maura Hopkins in Castlebar Garda station. We informed Sgt Hopkins that we expect an update on the Garda investigation as a matter of urgency. Since our neighbour’s untimely death vulnerable patients continue to die before their time at Mayo University Hospital. Huge numbers of people have contacted us over similar horrendous situations, and relayed how their own loved ones have died in cruel and inhumane circumstances. These things should not be. We continue to urge people to visit their loved ones in hospital, demand answers to your questions and refuse to be intimidated by staff.
