A garda charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in 2024, in which a 42-year-old man died, has entered guilty pleas.
Michael Ball, who was based at Drogheda Garda Station at the time, and who is suspended from duty, admitted dangerous driving causing the death of Niall McEneaney and failing to keep the vehicle at the scene on the Rathmullen Road, Drogheda, on 17 March 2024.
Mr McEneaney was well known in the locality as a GAA coach and former Louth hurler.
At Dundalk District Court this morning, State Solicitor for Co Louth Fergus Mullen told Judge Nicola Andrew that the DPP had consented to the defendant going forward to Dundalk Circuit Court on signed pleas.
Judge Andrews remanded him on bail to the current sitting of the Circuit Court next Monday on his own bond of €100.
The judge also granted legal aid for two counsel following an application by Defence solicitor Philip Hannon.
Judge Andrews also acknowledged members of Mr McEneaney’s family, who Mr Mullen had indicated were present in court when the case was called.
