Had a conversation with two very smart young Irish political minds this evening. One of them got me up to speed on just how rampant drug use is in Ireland now. Especially cocaine. It’s embedded in every facet of daily life from sportsmen using it as a pickup after a night’s drinking to tradesmen getting themselves straight for the morning commute. These two said it is particularly prevalent in law, politics and the NGO managerial classes. They have access to these scenes. It’s disturbing to imagine how much of our nation’s laws are being made and enforced by habitual coke users. We should certainly consider random drug testing for politicians, judges and other critical workers. Votes on laws by politicians under the influence of drugs should be thrown out. It will never happen of course but it raises a question – as these two this evening said – to what degree is the nation being led astray by coked up egos in positions of power?
