Darling of the British Royal and political elites Jimmy Savile (pictured in car with Charles), was probably the UK’s most prolific serial sexual predator, with allegations spanning over five decades from 1955 to 2009. UK Police, (who were themsleves embroiled on allegatioms of cover up and complicity) eventually documented up to 589 victims, of whom 450 specifically accused Savile of abuse, including 214 formally recorded criminal acts: 126 indecent assaults and 34 rape or “penetration” offenses. Horrifically the victims ranged in age from as young as 2 to 75, predominantly female children and teenagers, though some were male or adults. Savile’s modus operandi often involved grooming vulnerable individuals, such as young fans invited to BBC studios or patients at hospitals where he volunteered before assaulting them in private settings like dressing rooms, his caravan, or hospital wards. A review into the BBC, who is widely accused of turning a blind eye to hos well known perversions, identified 72 victims linked to Savile’s time there, including eight rapes, with assaults occurring “in virtually every one of the BBC premises at which he worked.” His access to institutions, facilitated by his celebrity and charitable roles, enabled abuse at 14 hospitals (including Stoke Mandeville, Leeds General Infirmary, and Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital) and 20 children’s hospitals, where he preyed on patients, staff, and visitors for decades. Savile was never prosecuted during his lifetime, despite many rumors and complaints; “post-mortem” inquiries, like Operation Yewtree, highlighted massive institutional failure at the BBC (who would go on to reveal several of their key personalities were abusers) and elsewhere that allowed him to evade accountability through a “culture of fear” and his elite connections. Many of the secrets of this vile British elite cabal remain hidden. For now.
