My mom raised me on her own while living with Down syndrome – and today, I wear a doctor’s coat because of her.

My name is James. When I was born, people told my mom, Grace, that raising a child by herself would be too hard for her. She didn’t argue. She didn’t try to convince anyone. She just signed the papers, held me close, and took me home.

From that day on, she showed up.
Grace enrolled in parenting classes, found community childcare, and never missed a school meeting or a doctor’s appointment.

When transportation fell through, she asked neighbors for help — and always returned the favor with kindness and determination. She kept learning, growing, and building skills so our life could be stable.

Last year, she sat in the front row as I stepped onto the stage to receive my white coat. And when I looked out at the crowd, I knew that moment didn’t belong to me alone.
She didn’t just raise a son.
She built a future.
