Today in 1958, 23 passengers, including the Busby Babes and members of the crew of Flight G-ALZU, perished in the Munich Air Disaster. Manchester United were returning from Belgrade after qualifying for the European Cup semi final when their Airspeed Ambassador attempted to take off from Munich in heavy snow and slush, skidding fatally on its third attempt. Eight of the young players were killed. Busby himself hovered near death for weeks.
