The can of worms just keeps opening. Morgan McSweeney, Keir Starmer’s former chief of staff and key Labour strategist, is first cousins with Clare Mungovan, a special adviser to Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris.

Their family comes from Macroom, Co. Cork, with a Fine Gael background (their aunt was a Fine Gael councillor, and Clare’s mother is Morgan’s aunt). Morgan’s father is Tim McSweeney, an accountant based in Macroom who, together with his wife Carmel, directs the company Tógáil Veilbhit Glas Teoranta, which has received €8.4 million in Irish government contracts since 2023 to provide accommodation for international protection applicants (asylum seekers).
