Two-year-old Omra Wali Jan died from a brain injury after being found unconscious in her Manchester home in November 2023, with burns, bruises, and a fractured rib. Morsal Mohammed Naim, 32, was sentenced to nine years after pleading guilty to manslaughter and child cruelty. Omra’s father, Firooz Wali Jan, 32, who had also pleaded guilty to child cruelty, was jailed for six years and nine months. The court heard Omra was abused over several weeks. Images and videos from Naim’s phone showed burn injuries on her right hand, bruising on her cheek, and a lip injury. On November 30, 2023, Wali Jan left for work, leaving Naim with Omra. She deleted several calls to her husband’s family in Afghanistan before calling a distant relative, who contacted emergency services. She carried Omra, unconscious and not breathing, upstairs to a neighbor and falsely claimed the child had choked on a biscuit. Omra was born in Afghanistan and raised by her father’s family before moving to live with Naim and Wali Jan in Levenshulme in September 2023.
