A 54-year-old man has been brought before the district court in Tralee, Co Kerry, charged with the murder of Michael Gaine.
Former US soldier Mike Kelley, with an address at Chapel Street in Tralee, was remanded in custody.
Detective Sergeant Mark O’Sullivan gave evidence at the two-minute hearing of charging the accused at 3.06pm this afternoon.
He said that Mr Kelley made no reply when the charge was put to him.
On the application of court presenter Chris Manton, Judge David Waters remanded the accused in custody to be back in court on 4 March for service of a book of evidence.
There was no application for bail.
Defence solicitor Pat Mann, who was appointed on free legal aid, said he had explained to his client that bail in a murder case was a matter for the High Court.
Mr Kelley did not speak during the hearing.
The court was told that Mr Kelley was living on a €150-per-week welfare allowance.
Mr Gaine’s widow, Janice, was present at the hearing.
