A FORMER professional footballer from Brazil has been caged for raping a 19-year-old woman at knifepoint in her bedroom.
Vile Tiago Damasceno Sousa was living in West Cork for approximately 18 months before the vile rape attack on March 29, 2024.
The Central Criminal Court heard how the brute, who threatened to kill his victim and her parents, made video recordings of the sex attack and used Google Translate to express his demands.
The then 39-year-old pleaded guilty to carrying out the rape, having been charged with six offences, but the case was dealt with on a full-fact basis.
He was sentenced to nine years in prison.
The victim, who was 19 at the time, wondered how a man with a daughter her own age could carry out a crime like this.
he said she self-harmed because of the impact the attack had on her.
Detective Garda Aine O’Regan of the Garda Protective Services Unit said the rapes, including vaginal and oral, and being threatened at knifepoint happened between 7am and 9am in her own home by Sousa, whom she had never spoken to before.
