The Minister for Housing has said he has asked the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) to investigate the case where dozens of households in a single estate in Wexford received eviction notices last week ahead of new rental rules.
On Friday, 36 households in the Hazelwood estate in Bridgetown, Co Wexford received a notice of termination of tenancy from their landlord meaning they do not benefit from the increased protections against eviction in the Residential Tenancies Act 2026 which came into effect on Sunday.
Minister James Browne said he does not believe what happened in his constituency is in any way related to the new rules.
“I know the head of enforcement went down there on Monday, and the RTB has been down there since.
“Right across the country, we have beefed up the RTB, and the RTB will ensure that tenants’ rights are protected, and that is essential that we see that happen.”
“Tenants are in a very vulnerable position when you balance against landlords, who very often are well funded, have access to a lot of information and power.
“The RTB is doing its job here, I’m glad to see that they have stepped in.
“The RTB assesses all of these situations on a case-by-case basis.”
