PRISON chiefs seized €6,000 worth of heroin this week after finding it sewn into the seam of a pair of jeans left in for an inmate,

The clothing item packed with drugs was recovered at Dublin’s Wheatfield Prison this week, where a posted care package packed with illegal gear was also nabbed through its screening process.

In a separate incident in recent days during a court escort, staff recovered a stash of drugs hidden in a public courthouse bathroom under a toilet brush holder.

The Irish Prison Service says the capture of various contraband this week caused “significant disruption” to those behind the plots.

A spokesman said: “The Irish Prison Service is committed to preventing contraband entering all prisons.

The Irish Prison service have invested in new measures amid the success of drone drop nets

“The Irish Prison Service has invested in new technologies and developed enhanced security measures to support reducing contraband entering our prisons.”

They say that the enhanced security yard netting at Wheatfield has been hugely successful too.

It was brought in there and in various prisons around the country to counter drone drops of drugs and weapons, which has led to major issues behind bars in recent years.
