THE sentencing of cocaine pilot Michal Luczak has been delayed to allow him find a new legal team.

Former law student Luczak, 44, was convicted by a jury last October following a three-week trial after he flew €8.4million worth of the drug into the midlands three years ago.

He was produced from Portlaoise Prison and was before Mullingar Circuit Court today for his sentencing hearing.

Solicitor John Anderson informed Judge Roderick Maguire that he was making an application to come off record for Luczak.

Luczak, dressed in a grey suit, blue shirt and tie, stood while handcuffed to a prison officer and told the judge that a recent “breakdown in communication” had occurred.

He explained that he is in the process of seeking new representation, but being in custody at Portlaoise Prison has meant there have been delays.

Luczak sought for his case to be adjourned for two months to get a new legal team in place and to give them time to become familiarised with the matter.

Judge Maguire noted that it was an unfortunate development given that there would be further delay after he was found guilty a number of months ago.

But he said that it is a “very serious matter” and Luczak needed to find a legal team.

Judge Maguire adjourned the matter to April 13, with the hope that Luczak will have a legal team in place to proceed with a sentence hearing. However, if he does not, the matter will be listed for mention.
