The three Coalition leaders have chosen to “hang together” as they embody the adage of avoiding the certainty of “hanging separately”. But they must realise multiple political hangings are not entirely unknown.

Just a decade ago, in February 2011, for example, two outgoing Government parties, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party, were given an electoral thumping by the voters which drove both groups to the brink of extinction. It’s worth thinking back on those lessons as there is a strange mood abroad among the public right now.

At present, all three parties of Government have an unpleasant air about them for their own individual reasons.
