A young mother caught with two knives, one of which was concealed in her underwear, had them for her own protection, a court heard.
Courtney Green (22) received a four-month suspended sentence when she appeared on bail before Judge Cephas Power.
The defendant, with an address at Main Street, Julianstown, Co Meath, admitted possession of two knives at Chapel Street in Balbriggan.
Garda Megan O’Brien told Swords District Court she was on mobile patrol on May 8, 2019 when she stopped and searched Green.
Gda O’Brien said she found a knife concealed in the defendant’s underwear and a second knife in her handbag.
The court heard Green had six previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Fiona D’Arcy said that Green had the knives for her own protection, as she was very scared and living in fear at the time of this incident.
Ms D’Arcy also said that Green had two young children, and was currently unemployed.
The solicitor asked Judge Power to be as lenient as possible, saying Green had cooperated fully with gardaí, and was very sorry for her behaviour.
Judge Power also ordered the destruction of the knives.
