The car driven by a 24-year-old woman who led gardai on a high speed chase which she live streamed on Instagram is now part of a Garda money laundering probe.

Gemma Greene, from Coolock, was arrested by gardai last Monday after she live streamed a lengthy chase from Dublin to Wicklow and back before the pursuit ended in Ballymun.

She is currently in Spain where she has shared a series of clips and videos on social media of herself and a friend from a holiday in Barcelona.

However it can be now revealed that the Mercedes C220 car that she was driving during the dramatic car chase is being held by gardai as part of a major money laundering investigation

“The car was originally seized from her due to the alleged road traffic offences that she committed but gardai are now holding onto it because it could be important evidence in an ongoing money laundering investigation,” a senior source said.

“Some of Ms Greene’s close associates are suspected of being heavily involved in criminality in Ballymun,” the source added.

The young woman has been officially warned by gardai of an active threat against her life and because of this it is unclear whether she will be fined for breaching coronavirus regulations by going on holiday to Spain.

Level 5 restrictions currently ban international travel for non-essential reasons.

“It is a tricky one in terms that she was given an official notification of a serious threat against her. It could be argued that this means that she is entitled to leave the country and therefore not face a fine for doing so but the matter is unclear,” the source pointed out.

Gardai are also investigating Ms Greene’s claims that the Mercedes that she was driving was modified.

“If this is the case she would haver been obliged to tell her insurance company,” the source pointed out.

“My car has 300 brake so it’s chipped, so it’d be faster than any of their cars,” she claimed in a recent newspaper interview.

“Everything she says in the media and on social media is being looked at,” the source added.

Ms Greene was arrested after the dramatic motorway chase on the evening of March 1 last and gardai said she is due to appear at Dublin District Court in connection with the incident, which is still under investigation, later this month.

At one point a helicopter from the Air Support Unit and around 20 vehicles, including 4x4s from the Armed Support Units (ASU), were involved in the chase.

During the Instagram livestream, she can be heard singing along to music and boasting about how she’s outrunning gardai in her car.

This week Ms Greene shared a series of clips and videos on social media of herself and a friend from a holiday in Barcelona.

Her pal is a 28-year-old man from Belclare Park in Ballymun.

Under a picture of herself and her friend, Greene wrote: ‘Ballymuns [sic] very own Bonnie & Clyde’.

In one clip showing off a rooftop pool area, she can also be heard saying: “Not a bad life, darling. This is me for the day.”
