Lieutenant General Roman Berdnikov was given a top job by Putin on August 26, but just over two weeks later he has been unceremoniously sacked following a Ukrainian counter-offensive and humiliating Russian defeat. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Putin sacked him following the rout in the north-eastern Kharkiv region. The Kremlin suffered its first major humiliating defeat in Kharkiv in a stunning counter-offensive that saw the Ukrainian forces retake 3,000sq km of land. The military masterstroke has been described as “the greatest since World War II” by military expert John Spencer.
