‘Valuables taken and till destroyed’ as another central Dublin city café broken into

A small bakery and café in south Dublin has been robbed after a thief smashed through their front window.

It’s A Trap, a plant-based café on Aungier Street, shared photos of the aftermath of the break-in, which happened at 9pm on Monday night, showing the glass door smashed into small pieces.

A statement on the café’s Instagram said that incidents of this nature have been happening “very often” on that side of the inner city of late.

They referred to recent break-ins at Bootleg on Drury Street and the popular tapas restaurant, La Gordita on Montague Street, both of which suffered a similar fate back in February.

“We wonder if this is something that we just have to get used to and accept, or will the local authorities take action before it gets out of control?” the statement added.

The café also said it was the third shop broken into in one night, describing the circumstances as “crazy”. They hope to “raise awareness” by speaking out about the burglary.A member of staff from the Capitol Lounge across the street saw the break-in happening and alerted gardaí.

The thief took “some valuables, destroyed the till, smashed the glass and made a hell of a mess in the shop”.

“We had to stay in the premises for around 4 hours cleaning the mess he left behind after his little adventure. We got home around 1am, on one of our very few days off.

“We are grateful because nothing major happened, but we hate to see actions like this becoming something normal.”

A photograph of the mess made by the person who broke inA garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí and emergency services attended an incident of burglary at a premises on Aungier St, Dublin 2 at approximately 9pm on March 18.

“A man aged in his 30s was arrested in connection with this incident and has since been charged. He appeared before a sitting of the CCJ at approximately 4.30pm on March 19,” they added.

The spokesperson also confirmed that a separate burglary took place at a premises on Saint Andrew Street Dublin 2 at approximately 4.30am on Monday night.

“No arrests have been made,” the statement said. “Investigations are ongoing at this time.”
