This is very Interesting Reading; hard to Know, the True Facts, here, but Questions Remain. Michael Sheridan’s book has highlighted these questions.

Did Ian Bailey plan to murder his first wife for the life insurance?

Ian Bailey married Sarah Limbrick, who was also a journalist, in Gloucester in 1980 when Mr Bailey was 23. They remained married for five years “until 1985 when she discovered that he had taken out a large life insurance policy on her without her knowledge. She left him and he then moved to Cork [in 1991].”

In 2003, during the libel trial, “Bailey denied ever using violence [against] her – though he admitted their relationship was stormy. The court heard that a witness will claim Mr Bailey told him that he once had a blackout – and when he came out of it, he realised he was trying to strangle his wife, Ms Limbrick.” Bailey denied the strangulation story.

“However, he acknowledged he was involved in a bitter row with his ex-wife when they divorced shortly after moving into a new house and he discovered that his name had not been put on the house deeds.”

Bailey was apparently involved in an acrimonious divorce with his first wife. There was a dispute over the house (worth 500K and located in the Forest of Dean). During the breakup, Bailey found out his name was not on the deeds and he claimed he was owed 250,000 Pounds.

According to his wife, he took out a life insurance policy on her in the amount of 250,000 pounds. She says he did this behind her back and forged her signature.

Journalist Senan Molony went to England in 1997 and confirmed with the Avon police that there was an ongoing investigation into this. Senan Molony reported on this in The Irish Star (Sat Feb 22nd 1997 “Bailey in 500,000 Pounds Divorce Row”).

According to Michael Sheridan’s (new) book, Bailey admitted he was questioned by gardai about this and claimed to know nothing about the matter.

After Sophie’s murder, we know Ian Bailey wrote many articles in the newspapers promoting the theory that Sophie’s husband may have had her murdered in order to collect on her life insurance.

Soooooo…. why was Ian Bailey secretly taking out life insurance on his wife when they were on the brink of divorce?

Sarah Limbrick’s son Jamie, born in 1986, raped and murdered his great grandmother and is currently incarcerated. It’d be interesting to know who his father is.

Ya there’s a thread here but it’s inconclusive. He did live with his grandparents though who were on holiday when it happened. Apperwntly he went looking for a sheep first and that’s not even made up

Given the way the media have always hounded Bailey it’s pretty unlikely that that lunatic is his son and they forgot to tell us.

Not baileys son. Marriage ended in 1983. This one keeps doing the rounds and it’s ridiculous.

That’s very interesting, I’m not sure so much if he planned to murder her but that does seem like a psychotic thing to do. Or potentially legal, does anyone know if there’s any other reason for life insurance? In a case where deeds didn’t include a spouse’s name

Do we have nay more info, like did bailey pay for half the house? And did he get the quarter mil in the end?

Pretty clearly not. He was broke after the marriage.

No, it was his ex-wifes father who paid for the house apparently, he was a wealthy man.

I’m not sure if he was rightfully owed the money. Haven’t been able to find that info. Apparently, they sold the house they had been living in (part of which was converted into a place to care for old people which provided an income stream). Then they bought this new 500K house and the marriage ended shortly after buying the new house.

Very interesting. Didn’t the ex-wife confirm that there was no physical abuse? I’m not sure I believe the strangulation bit.

Sarah Limbrick apparently made a statement (I can’t find it at the moment) where she claimed he did not physically abuse her, but he was “psychologically violent” in that he created a very intimidating atmosphere in the home and also that he was violent in that he punched walls, overturned tables and threw her typewriter across the room.

From independent.ie and Michael Sheridan’s recent book. I couldn’t find any more info from those sources. It seems Bailey won’t talk about his first wife and also the first wife (apart from statements she made to police) will not talk about Bailey.

well “the husband did it” is fairly cliché so i’m not sure if i can really hold that to him as an original thought.

but yeah, i would say he was planning that
